Community: Intentional Unselfishness @Work

I am a beneficiary of community-the intentional unselfishness of ordinary people who were my elders when growing up in the Mississippi Delta. I experienced their unselfishness at a time when their lives were being defined by the separatist system of the deep south. It made all the difference in how my life turned out. Being kind and thoughtful to benefit others is powerful and transformational...and not very expensive.

In a world that is being defined by bytes and bites and pentium chips, is there a place for community? For some the term 'community' is a throwback to another time and place, but for me it is as vital and effective today as it was when I was a child. When community is embraced, lived out and practiced in all the spaces of our lives, the return is indeed phenomenal. And it shows up best in the infrastructure of relationships that exist among humankind. I wish I could get more people to understand the incredible power of transformation that they have at their fingertips.

Often time, our reality becomes so jaded , it is easy to allow ourselves to shy away from the exploration that really matters, not the trip to the moon or the journey to the ocean's floor, but the trip across the hall, across the yard, or down the hall to get to know the other human being sharing this great room called planet earth.
